1.Dont ask questions unless you genuinely want to know the answer. As a business leader, your role is to motivate others to fulfill the organization’s vision. What would motivate you more: being asked for your opinion or being told what to do? If you’re like most people, youd prefer to be asked. In fact, 95% of the people Gary surveyed (business leaders included) preferred to be asked questions rather than told what to do. 2.Trust your team. The simplest way to build trust is to trust others. If you demonstrate trust in your peers and employees, they will, in turn, be more likely to trust you. You can demonstrate trust by asking more and commanding less, and dont forget that listening demonstrates trust, too. 3.Dont provide the answer if your employee is responsible for the decision. Gary says, that sometimes it’s hard to refrain from an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, intellect, or experience, but when you provide answers and, in essence, do others’ work, youre taking the accountability and the opportunity to gain experience away from your employees. Instead of completing their work, ask questions that help them arrive at their own answers. 4.Just because it worked for you doesnt mean it will work for them. Even if you have a process that best suites you style, your employees and peers will be more apt to find the best process for themselves it if they arrive at this understanding on their own.
