The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2010. The HFMA can trace its roots back to 1950, two years after the NHS was established. Concerned that financial management would be subsumed into the administration function, the Associations founding fathers were determined that professional accountants should play a key role in the NHS. They needed a forum for influence and debate and so the Association was born. Today, with nearly 4000 members and over 10000 e-learners, todays HFMA looks very different from its humble beginnings. However, the Associations objectives have not changed drastically over the years: HFMA still promotes a high standard of financial management; informs the service and UK Health Departments on financial matters and provides members opportunities for networking, discussion and research. In its 60th anniversary year, the HFMA looks to build on these solid foundations, shaping the future of the National Health Service. To commemorate and celebrate this achievement a film has been created detailing the history of the Association.
