To receive a discharge in bankruptcy, a debtor must complete a financial management course after filing bankruptcy. The cost of the course varies and may be waived or reduced depending on the debtor’s financial circumstances. Debtors can find a list of financial management courses on the bankruptcy court’s website. Once a debtor receives a bankruptcy discharge, creditor are prohibited from attempting to collect the discharged debt. If creditors violate the bankruptcy discharge by attempting to collect the debt, the creditor may be fined or forced to pay the debtor’s legal fees. Of course, a debtor is allowed to voluntarily repay the debt after bankruptcy if they choose to do so.
